The Gospel of John (Part 2) | The Healing at Bethesda | July 19, 2026

Sermon Description:

There is a particularly modern packaging of a common human instinct to seek healing through self-help. In fact, the self-help industry is a nearly $70 billion industry. In John 5, Jesus encounters a man who has been crippled for 38 years, who is hoping there’s magical healing power in a pool of water. Through this encounter, Jesus teaches us a number of things. One, that pain makes us vulnerable to false hope (we all have our own "pools" we look to instead of Jesus). Two, that it's easier to explain our pain than pursue healing (often through excuses that keep us stuck). And three, that real healing is experienced through obedience, not passivity. This story also invites us to carry whatever is crippling us directly to Jesus, the true source of healing, rather than settling for the world's substitutes.
