There’s a joke that says “If a person talks to God, that’s called prayer. But if God talks back, that’s called insanity.” This is a generalized feeling in our culture about people who feel they have “heard from God.” But does God still speak? Not in a general way, but in a specific and particular and deeply personal way? Throughout the Bible, the terms “discernment” and “prophecy” are expressions of the Holy Spirit's guidance. Both are invitations from God Himself to develop an intimate relationship with Him by learning to recognize His genuine voice, contrasting it with false influences, and understanding prophecy not as prediction, but as a loving, personal message meant to build up the community. Ultimately, the goal of both is a humble, Spirit-led attentiveness to God's voice in everyday life.
