The Future of Everything - Week 1

Often, during the Christmas Season, we are surrounded by those we love the most. And there’s something beautiful about that. But. If love is the highest Christian ethic, and loving everyone is the way that CHrist loved, then that’s a good deal more difficult. Jay Kim speaks about two ends of the spectrum of people who are challenging to love: one because it’s easy to forget about them (namely, the global poor and those in need) and the other because we don’t WANT to love them (our enemies).

IN this introduction to the Book of 1 Thessalonians, Jay Kim talks about a particular Greek word that keeps popping up (four times in the short letter, in fact) - the word parousia. It’s a word that ties into kings, and kingdoms, and the future - and for Christians, the promise of a reality so good and so real that it can charge every moment here - even terrible ones - with hope. As we’ll see for the people of Thessalonica, this simple, four-syllable ancient word contained a universe of meaning, and a universe of hope. And if we have ears to hear, it can do the same for us.
