Baptism

BAPTISM

For literally hundreds of years, followers of Jesus have made public declarations that they are “all in” with Jesus in a ceremony called “Baptism.”  Baptism is a public declaration of faith done by a believer in the presence of a local group of Christians. Here’s some information about what Baptism is, and what it isn’t:

Baptism was a nearly universal practice in the early church.
It was not only something Jesus Himself did, but something that He called His followers to do.

Baptism was a formal response to the Gospel.
It was not done accidentally, or haphazardly. People who were baptized usually were questioned and responded with an answer to ensure they clearly understood they were making a formal stand to identify with Jesus and claim and proclaim Him as their Messiah. It was an important aspect of the salvation process (Repent and be baptized. – Acts 2:38)

Baptism was a personal response to the Gospel.
This means that it was a personal decision made by an individual, not by a tribe or family or nation. Infants, because they cannot make decisions, were not baptized.

Baptism was communal.
The result of Baptism was reception into and identification with this new community that followed Jesus. Baptism signified communion with Jesus, and therefore, with all His followers.

Baptism is a sacrament.
A sacrament is a symbolic religious activity that physically points to an invisible reality. In this case, the cleansing of a person’s physical body with water represents the cleansing of that person from sin by the miraculous power of Jesus’ sacrifice. The person going under the water is a symbolic representation of the death of their old self. Emerging from the water symbolizes the resurrection, through the power of Jesus, into new and eternal life.

It was the new mark of God’s Covenant People.
There is a link between Baptism (and the New Covenant of Jesus) and the mark of God’s old covenant with the people of Israel. Similar to the old mark, Baptism can also serve as a signpost that helps people distinguish who God has called and chosen into His beloved community, though the real signpost is the presence of the Holy Spirit.

If you’re “all in” with Jesus, and would like to be baptized, you can sign up here.

Six40 Life

SIX40 LIFE

Building upon the foundation that is Discover WestGate, Six40 Life is an interactive lab led by our WestGate Church staff designed to help you understand more about the heart of our culture—why we exist and what we think Jesus wants to do through us.

We examine what it means to become more like Jesus—to be Six40 Disciples—right here and right now in this church and city.  During this time, we dive into what we call "the three loves" that are articulated by Jesus as being the highest calling of humanity.

To love God.
Love one another, and
Love our neighbor.

Six40 Life is currently on Winter Break. We will have a new and exciting Six40 format available in February!

90 Days of Prayer

90 DAYS OF PRAYER

As part of the ALL OUT sermon series, we’re encouraging everyone at every campus of WestGate Church (and every Life Group) to emphasize prayer for the next 90 days.

Daily:

Facebook Live PrayerCast ::
Join us for a live prayer devotional led by pastoral staff every week day via Facebook Live at noon.  You don't need a Facebook account to access the daily videos, and you can view them at any point after they're broadcast.

Prayer Guide ::
A weekly prayer guide email will be sent out every Monday morning to the all-church email list. (if you’re not on our email list, please fill out the Connect Card with your name and email in your worship bulletin)

Weekly:

Wednesday Fasts ::
Join us every Wednesday as people across WestGate Church deliberately take something from their daily routine and remove it temporarily to intentionally create space to have a conversation with God (skip a meal, entertainment media fast for the day, etc)

Pre-service Prayer ::
Join us at 4pm Saturdays (at our Saratoga Campus) or at 8:30am Sundays (on all campuses) to pray.

Life Group Prayer ::
Our Life Groups will have a special emphasis of prayer for the next 90 days provided in the Life Group curriculum.

Prayer E-Chain
Sign up to receive a complete list of all the non-confidential prayer requests that were submitted from all campuses for that week. (if you want to be on the prayer chain, fill out a Connect Card with your name and email and put the words “Prayer Chain” in the comments section)

Monthly:

Prayer + Worship Nights ::
Join us for three (3) monthly All-campus Gatherings for Prayer and Worship at the Saratoga Worship Center.  The dates for these events are February 24, March 24, April 14 (Good Friday)
