Intro to the Six40 Life

Six40Life_Slide.jpg

INTRO TO THE SIX40 LIFE

We want to help everyone who comes to WestGate Church move from attending to belonging.  This is more than a t-shirt slogan (although we did print t-shirts with that saying).

We believe the Christian life isn’t just difficult to do alone.  It’s impossible. Which is why we stop a few times each year to encourage everyone at every campus (no matter how long they’ve been apart of our community) to take intentional steps to get more connected to God and to others.

If you’ve been around WestGate Church long enough, you might have heard of the term “Six40.”  But what is that? Six40 Discipleship is our way of saying that we’re trying to live and love like Jesus.

But...becoming more like Jesus isn’t a one-size-fits-all program.  We’re all unique, broken and gifted in different ways. Which means that steps for personal growth should be both flexible and personalized.

Which is why we’re excited to introduce a brand-new format for our Intro to the Six40 Life material.

It starts with an introductory session, held each second Sunday of the month.  You’ll explore the “three loves” that are core to our culture and values: loving God, loving one another and loving our neighbor.

After that, you can work through the material - which will help you understand and grow in your faith, whether you're new at this, or have been around church for a while.  And you can go at your own pace and in your own time.

Another part of this is that you’ll be given your own personalized coach to meet with you, listen to your story, and help you figure out what your next step with God might be.

Sign up today.

HIKING AT QUICKSILVER

Go hiking at the Quicksilver Mines Trail in South San Jose. Meet at 8am at the Trail Head at 17571 McAbee Rd, San Jose, CA 95120. Meet at 8am. Hike will last roughly 1.5 hours. It’s an aerobic hike, but not too tough.

FLY A KITE

Let’s go fly a kite. Up to the highest height. No seriously. This is great for kids and families, and anyone who loves books by Khaled Hosseini or is really into yards and yards of string. We’ll meet at the Mountain View Kite Park from 6pm–8pm.

SURFING

Meet at the parking lot at the end of 41st Street in Santa Cruz at low tide. We’ll surf for roughly 3 hours. (Weather permitting. We won’t surf if it’s raining, but hey, it’s May and the likelihood of that is really small.)

BIKE RIDE (ADVANCED)

This will be a 2-hour road bike ride around through Saratoga/Cupertino and/or Los Altos. Must be able to ride efficiently and manage some hills. Meet at 2pm at the Saratoga Upper Patio.

FAMILY PARK DAY

Come hang out with your kids at Saratoga Creek Park from 10-11:30am. Bring a snack to share. We will meet by the playground. The park is located on Hoyet Drive off of Cordelia Avenue (off Lawrence Expressway).

VASONA PARK FAMILY PICNIC

This is perfect for families with kids. We’ll be going to Vasona Park for a family picnic. We’ll meet at noon, and head over to the Oak Creek Meadow (it’s the big field to the left immediately past the park’s entrance).

BIKE RIDE (INTERMEDIATE)

Meet at the WestGate Church South Hills Campus at 1pm and we’ll go for a moderately nice road bike ride around the beautiful back roads around South Hills. Maybe we’ll be gone for an hour. Maybe two. We’ll see how we feel.

BIKE RIDE (BEGINNERS)

We’ll be going on a morning bike ride along Baylands Trail around Moffett Field. This is a casual ride good for adults of all ages and children 8 yrs and older. For those wanting to ride one way it is possible to catch the VTA Light Rail at the Lockheed Station in Sunnyvale and ride it back to downtown Mt. View (bring money for fare). We’ll meet at the Stevens Creek Trail entrance at Central Ave, Mountain View, CA. We’ll ride from 8:00am - 11:00am

BOOK CLUB

Join us for a book club, where we’ll read interesting and provocative books and then discuss them. For the month of May we would discuss "The Listening Life: Embracing Attentiveness in a World of Distraction" by Adam McHugh. For the month of June we would discuss "The Making of an Ordinary Saint: My Journey from Frustration to Joy with the Spiritual Disciplines" by Nathan Foster. We’ll meet in the dining area inside Whole Foods Market on Blossom Hill and Almaden Expressway from 7:15pm–9:00 pm.

PAINT SOME CERAMICS

We'll get together to make some painted ceramic items. We’ll do this from about 5pm–6:30pm on Thursday, May 23rd and Thursday, June 13th. Meet at Color Me Mine at 5337 Prospect Rd, San Jose 95129.

HIKING (INTERMEDIATE)

Intermediate/advanced hiking at Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. Meet at 7:30am. We are going to hike part of Seven Springs Trail loop, approximately 3-4 mile hike. Parking is limited; if lot is full, park on the street down from lot.

COFFEE CRAWL (YOUNG ADULTS)

We’re going on a Coffee Crawl in the City. We will be visiting some popular coffee shops in San Francisco to do a coffee tasting. We will either rally up at the Saratoga campus or possibly BART on Fridays at 11am and plan to be back by 5:30pm. This is for anyone who finds themselves wanting to adventure in the city, want to explore coffee/matcha, and meet other young adults.

FAITH-AND-WORK BREAKFAST (YOUNG ADULTS)

We will attend the Engage Breakfast hosted by Connect Silicon Valley- Speaker Christy Childers - Employment Brand Manager at Facebook. Childers also co-leads the Christians@Facebook group and Interfaith@Facebook resource group. She will be speaking on encouraging young millennials to fully realize and live out their faith at work. The breakfast is from 7am-830am. You’ll need to get your ticket by clicking here - but WestGate Church will have a reserved table(s), so we can all sit together.

TACO TUESDAY (YOUNG ADULTS)

Hey Young Adults! What’s better than Tuesday? Taco Tuesdays, of course. Join us for Taco Tuesday with La Burrita Food Truck at Hapa's Brewing Company in San Jose.

HIKING 2 (INTERMEDIATE)

Intermediate/advanced hiking at Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. Meet at 9am. We are going to hike part of Seven Springs Trail loop, approximately 3-4 mile hike. Parking is limited; if lot is full, park on the street down from lot.

CALERO HIKE

Hike around the Calero Reservoir at Calero County Park, 23205 McKean Rd. Meet at 9am on May 17th and 8am on June 15th. The hike is easy-to-moderate and should take roughly 60-90 minutes.

KIDS PLAYDATE (MOMS HANG-OUT)

PLAYDATE! Meet at the Seven Seas Park in Sunnyvale. Parents hang out while kids play on the awesomely-fun structures or splash pad. Play from 10am-12noon.

FAMILY PLAYDATE

This is perfect for families with young kids. We’ll be hanging out at Seven Seas Park in Sunnyvale. This meetup will be a time for parents/kids to connect. The park has multiple playgrounds (geared more towards younger kids), a water play area, and a grass field. We will meet on Tuesday nights from around 5:30-7pm. For anyone who wants to come, we will be meeting at the water play area. Note: parking can be a bit challenging sometimes, but in worst case, people can park walking distance away in one of the neighborhoods.

FAMILY PICNIC IN THE PARK

Hey, it’s Friday Fun Day at the Park. At the end of a long summer week, who wants to cook on Friday night? So don’t! Bring your family, pack a picnic dinner (or buy something take-out!) and bring a blanket and join us for a Family Picnic Dinner at the Park. We’ll be meeting at Doerr Park (Park Wilshire Drive and Potrero Drive in San Jose). Meet from 5pm-7pm. Friday, May 17th & June 21st

GO SEE TOY STORY 4

Woody and Buzz and the whole crew are back for the final installment of this beloved Pixar franchise. Since Toy Story 4 comes out on June 20, so we’ll all go see it Saturday, June 22nd. We’ll watch the movie at Century 20 Oakridge at the Oakridge Mall, and then afterwards, hang out in the high-class Mall Food Court. Exact times are yet to be determined.

Adopt-A-Family 2018

Screen Shot 2018-11-07 at 3.00.53 PM.png

Adopt-a-Family

Adopt-A-Family provides a way to support local families in our community who could use a little extra help this Christmas providing meaningful gifts for their children.

WestGate Church partners with families in our own church as well as our partners in the Moreland School District to identify families in our community going through financial hardship.  Our goal is to help parents and families going through a tough season make Christmas a time of joy and generosity.

HOW ADOPT-A-FAMILY WORKS:
We want to allow parents to shop for the gift themselves, because no one knows what their kids want and need better than the parents. Just like last year, we are asking for gift cards for places like Target, Walmart, Kohl’s, Safeway ($50-$75 per child).  These packages of Gift Cards will be dropped off at the participating schools.

WAYS TO HELP

If you would like to sponsor a family (either as an individual, as a life group or as a group of friends) fill out the Adopt-A-Family card in your bulletin or sign up by clicking the button below.

If you attend WestGate Church and the Christmas season is a hardship for you (OR or if you know of a family that attends WestGate Church that could benefit from this initiative) please click on the button below to fill out a nomination form. A member of our Care Team will follow up with you.

These packages of Gift Cards will be dropped off at the participating schools.  If you'd like to personalize your gift, you can buy personalized stocking stuffers for the kids.

FAMILY VISION NIGHT

Family Vision 2 (1).jpg

Family Vision Night

Every family unit - whether they realize it or not - is heading somewhere.

But very few families go someplace on purpose.

What could it look like if your family had a clear goal and mission?  A culture that was healthy?

What if - together as a family - you developed a vision that came from your family of origin's unique past but also looked toward the future?

And what if we did this together, as families?  And asked Jesus for help (because let's be honest - this stuff is hard!)

For the past year, Westgate Church's Student Ministries has been part of Fuller Youth Institute's Sticky Faith Ministry Cohort.  Our pastors met with Fuller's staff to examine and analyze the latest research and determine the best practices to help churches partner with families to help them create and develop that vision.

During the FAMILY VISION NIGHT we will:

  • Eat dessert together as families.
  • Get a chance to meet the other parents of teenagers in the church
  • Eat dessert
  • Hear the latest research from Fuller's Youth Institute about what's working - and what's not working - in modern families when it comes to helping make faith "sticky" and lasting for teens
  • Eat dessert
  • Hear from leaders of JHM and HSM about resources that WestGate Church is offering to help parents
  • Pray together as families.
  • Eat dessert.

So. Bring a dessert made by your family (and at the end of the night, we'll give out prizes to the Best Family Dessert).  But also come and have fun, connect with other families and be inspired to invite God to help your family.

Because, again, God knows we all need a little help.

NOTE: This event is designed for the whole family, but if you’d like, we do provide childcare 4 and under.  Just fill out the form when you RSVP.

RSVP today.
