THE WISE LIFE: Better Decisions, Fewer Regrets

The wisdom to build a worthwhile life is impossible until we get really honest with ourselves, and really honest about the nature of our hearts—our predisposition for self-deception. The prophet Jeremiah, in speaking about humanity’s decision-making problem wrote, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” While this goes directly against modern individualistic sensibilities, recognizing this truth is the first step toward wisdom. And so we examine how we can get to the point where we honestly resolve that “I will not lie to myself, even when the truth hurts.”
