Matthew : Season 7 - Week 5

SERMON DESCRIPTION
In Matthew 16, the setting becomes important, and we know this because Matthew goes out of his way to point out that Jesus and His disciples have now come to the thriving city of Caesarea Philippi. This city was not only filled with idols and temples to particular Roman Gods - it was literally named after the leader of the Roman Empire and the governor of that region. All sorts of idolatry going on. And it’s in this setting that Jesus asks Peter a particular question: Who do you say that I am? This is a question for Peter about Jesus’ identity, but it’s also a question for us. In a world full of idolatry, just as robust and powerful as ancient Rome, do we see Jesus for who He truly is? As the Messiah - the High Priest and the True King sent by God Himself for our world?
