Matthew : Season 7 - Week 2

Sermon Description:

In Matthew 14, we learn some terrible news: John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus and the prophet who announced Him and baptized Him, is killed by King Herod. Overcome by grief, Jesus attempts to retreat and get away, but when He sees the crowds and masses, the text says He has “compassion on them” and spends a long time healing people and helping them. In this, we get a glimpse of God’s character in Jesus’ nearly-bottomless compassion and deep reservoir of love. And in the miracle that follows - the feeding of the 5,000 - we see God once again providing sustenence for His people in the desert. But this time, instead of food falling directly from heaven, we see Jesus’ disciples involved in the miracle. They’re the ones who identify the problem, and they’re the ones who Jesus invites to solve it. And through all of this, we see Jesus more clearly, His mission more clearly, and even our potential role more clearly.
