FAQ’s

WHAT KIND OF CHURCH ARE YOU?

WestGate is a non-denominational Christian church that holds to the authority of the Bible as God’s Word. You can find more specific information about our stances and views by checking out our what we believe page. Take a look at our other pages to find out more about what we do here on the WestGate campus, in the community, and around the world.

WHAT DO PEOPLE NORMALLY WEAR?

We’re pretty casual! Most people wear relaxed clothing—shorts and t-shirts are common—but please feel free to wear whatever makes you comfortable. You won’t see too many shirt and tie combinations... so leave the formal wear at home. In fact, most of our pastors teach in jeans and a t-shirt.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY SERVICES?

Nothing. We know you don’t believe us, but it’s true!

Our services, including the music, teaching, children's programs, and other elements are all the same. But we’ll concede that each service has a unique “feel” depending on who is there.

Saturday evenings tend to be less crowded and a little more relaxed as people are often coming in from their Saturday activities. Parking tends to be easy to find and plentiful. Offroad, our Junior High service, meets only during the 6:40 service.

Sundays tend to be pretty busy with our worship center and childrens' programs pretty close to full and people rushing off to their afternoon activities. If you come on a Sunday morning, be sure to give yourself a few extra minutes to park.

WHAT'S YOUR MUSIC LIKE?

WestGate’s music is all about helping people enter the presence of God in worship, so our worship band embraces a lot of different styles from time to time. Primarily, we have a rock or alternative sound, but we love to change things up, and have included many different instruments, from flutes to fiddles to bagpipes, in our services.

We try to introduce a new song at least once a month, but you will also hear hymns that are hundreds of years old. Check out the WORSHIP + ARTS page for more information.

WHAT IF I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THIS WHOLE JESUS THING?

Everyone has to start their journey somewhere. You're welcome to check us out no matter where you are on your faith journey. And don't worry, we won't single you out or anything like that. Just show up, check us out, and feel free to contact us anytime with questions or to talk theology.

DO YOU HAVE CHILDRENS' PROGRAMS?

Kids are a big deal at WestGate! That’s why we make sure we don’t just offer childcare—we have fun and engaging programs for all ages of children, where they can learn about God and learn how to apply His Word to their lives. Please check out our children's ministries (infant through 5th grade) and student ministries (6th-12th grade) pages for more information.

CAN I BRING MY SPECIAL NEEDS CHILD TO THE CHILDRENS' PROGRAMS?

Contact us-kids@westgatechurch.org- and we will work with you to provide the best possible experience for your child that we can. For some children, that could involve a special buddy that hangs out with them in class.

ARE YOU GOING TO ASK ME FOR MONEY?

We do accept an offering during our services, but we feel strongly that you should never give to an organization until you trust them.
So please, until you know us, don't give to us.

For more info about our views on giving, where the money goes, and how to give, check out our giving at westgate page

HOW OFTEN DO YOU DO COMMUNION?

We offer Communion as a part of our services just about once a month.

HOW DOES COMMUNION WORK?

Although the order of the worship service might change from week to week, WestGate usually participates in Communion during a set of three to five songs. You will be prompted to reflect and pray on your own during the worship music, and then whenever you feel ready, you can approach one of the Communion stations (there are usually four tables spread throughout the room). Take a cup of grape juice and a piece of cracker. You can eat and drink while you’re at the table, or return to your seat to take the elements. This is typically done individually, so no need to wait for everyone to do it together.

WHO CAN TAKE COMMUNION AT WESTGATE?

We practice an “open table” for Communion, meaning that any believer in Jesus Christ is welcome to take Communion.
The elements represent the reality of Christ's resurrection, so we ask that if you're not a follower of Christ that you not participate in communion, as it'd be an act of hypocrisy.

DO YOU HAVE ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES OR BIBLE STUDIES?

We don’t have Sunday school classes or Bible studies for adults on Sundays. Instead, adults can be involved with Life Groups, most of which meet weekly to study the Bible, pray for each other, serve together, and have fun getting to know each other. We also have opportunities to connect: Explore and Discovery, where you can learn more about WestGate and what we believe. For kids (newborn all the way to 5th grade) we have programs during the services that are designed specifically for their age group. Junior high and high school students have their own programs; some of them meet during service times and others don't. Please check out our Children’s Ministries (0-5th grade) and Student Ministries (6th-12th grade) pages for more information about classes for your kids.
