Previous Christmas Messages

Songs of the Advent :: Hope
Hope is about a feeling.  It’s a strong desire for a certain thing to happen.  But it’s also about having grounds to believe that something good will happen.  In this sermon, Steve explains how what happened that first Christmas morning is really - first and foremost - about hope.  And how in the birth of Jesus, every man, woman and child on planet Earth has real reasons to feel incredible hope.

Divinely Dysfunctional :: Mary
Right after she gives birth, Mary meets a man named Simeon who speaks a prophetic word, saying that her child, the one called Jesus, will cause her great joy and great pain. We see through her that God’s favor and blessing often takes us to places we would never choose. There is nothing flashy about Mary.  But her obedience and faith leave a legacy we can still not only learn from, but be inspired by.

Advent Conspiracy 2016

What is Christmas really about?  I mean *really*?  Every year for the past 7 years at WestGate Church, we’ve participated in something called Advent Conspiracy, where we encourage everyone to reclaim the spirit of the Christmas season by worshipping fully, spending less, giving more and loving all.  In this (the weekend immediately after Black Friday), we encourage people to resist the cultural Christmas narrative of consumption by choosing to instead simplify their hearts and minds.  Easy to say.  Hard to do.  But worth it.

Who is Jesus :: Easter 2017
There's no doubt that Jesus Christ is the most influential figure in history.  But why?  Join us this Easter as we explore the story of the Resurrection of Jesus, an ancient story that still has a powerful impact on us today.  We'll explore why it takes faith to doubt this story, what problems result when you dismiss it out-of-hand, and why we think it's the most beautiful story ever told.

Other Awesome Resources

The Bible is a big book and a big story (that sometimes can be intimidating and difficult to understand).  Our friends at The Bible Project produce short-form, fully animated videos to make the biblical story accessible to everyone, everywhere.  They also create videos, podcasts, and study guides that explore the Bible’s unified story.  Here are three great ones to start with.

Heaven and Earth
The over-arching, grand story of the Bible is that Heaven and Earth were meant to overlap, and Jesus is on a mission to bring them together once and for all.

The Messiah
Jesus fulfilled the ancient biblical promise of a wounded victor who would rescue humanity. He was the one who overcame evil itself by allowing it to destroy him.
